10 landmarks on India's journey to its 500th Test
1971 - First win against Windies in Windies (Port of Spain)
This was really something. We beat the mighty West Indies in the West Indies. At Trinidad, a century by Dilip Sardesai and two half-centuries by Sunil Gavaskar saw us giving a strong batting display. We gave an all-round bowling performance with S Venkataraghavan picking up a 5-wicket haul in the second innings as we won by 7 wickets.
The tour also marked the sensational debut of Gavaskar who piled up an astonishing 774 runs in the series, an India record that stands till this very day. That helped us draw all the other matches and win the series.
In the same year, we won our first series in England, a greater achievement because the England team had just won five series on the trot and were undefeated in a total of 10 series before that one.
