Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir lashed out on Thursday, following a tweet that glorified MS Dhoni’s winning six, on the ninth anniversary of India’s historic 2011 World Cup triumph.
“Just a reminder: #worldcup2011 was won by entire India, entire Indian team & all support staff. High time you hit your obsession for a SIX,” he tweeted.
Gambhir (97) and Dhoni (91*) played match-winning knocks on the night of the final against Sri Lanka, as India won the World Cup after a long wait of 28 years.
The opener ensured a steady platform for the Men in Blue, following the cheap dismissals of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar making his presence felt with a handy knock.
The legendary wicket-keeper batsman carried on after Gambhir's dismissal, finishing the chase off with a mighty six, which is what everyone remembers. However, the opener's contribution can never be negated.
India's triumph in the 2011 World Cup was followed by a lot of celebration in every part of the country, having failed to get across the line in the final of the 2003 WC against Australia.
