SAIKHOM MIRABAI CHANU
Women's Weightlifting (women's 49kg event)
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu became the only Indian weightlifter to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics after securing the 2nd spot in the Absolute Rankings on June 12, 2021.
This will be the 26-year-old's second Olympics after the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The former world champion, who was earlier ranked 4th rose to the 2nd place after North Korea's withdrawal from Tokyo 2020.
Chanu bagged the bronze medal in the recently-concluded Asian Championship when she lifted 86kg in snatch and a world record of 119kg in clean and jerk for a total of 205kg to set a new world record in clean and jerk while also bettering her own national record in the process.
Chanu, one of India’s brightest medal prospect at the Olympics, is set to train in the USA until the Tokyo Games.
The Sports Authority of India Mission Olympic Cell has sanctioned around Rs 70.8 lakh for Chanu’s one-and-a-half month long overseas training in USA, a SAI source told PTI.
