David Warner made a dream comeback to the Indian T20 League when he hit his 37th fifty (85) during Hyderabad's opening match against Kolkata at the Eden Gardens. This score means Warner now has the most fifties in the League.
Before the start of the league's 12th edition, Warner and Gautam Gambhir jointly held the record with 36 fifties. Gambhir, who led Kolkata to two titles moved to Delhi last year before stepping down as captain midway into the 2018 season after a poor start for the team.
The former Indian opener retired from all forms of cricket which means he will now not be able to add to his tally of fifties in the league.
Warner was playing his 115th match in the league and was well on course to score his 4th hundred but fell to Andre Russel for a 53-ball 85.
Banned for a year by Cricket Australia over his role in the ball-tampering scandal, Warner was also not allowed to play the Indian T20 League by the BCCI. However, when he finally stepped on the field, the Aussie came out all guns blazing and took Kolkata bowlers to the cleaners.
Warner has been a mainstay of Hyderabad batting line up for many seasons. In 2016, he scored 848 runs as Hyderabad defeated Bangalore to win the title. Back in 2014, he had amassed 528 runs and then made 562 runs from 14 matches in 2015.
The year 2017 was also not bad. The opener, in destructive form, had scored 641 runs then.
The knock at the Eden Gardens has also made Warner become the leading run-scorer against Kolkata with 761 runs.
