Indian players were disasters as managers in the 1990s. Legend Kapil Dev failed to lift Team India as coach. The focus then shifted to foreign coaches. While John Wright and Gary Kirsten were successful, Greg Chappell was controversial and the jury is still out on Duncan Fletcher. There is a strong opinion that we should move away from foreign coaches. Either way with BCCI in a state of flux (uncertain management, IPL crisis and court cases), it may not go in for a major decision like hiring a coach. Shastri is doing well as Director and may be made permanent and seems to be gelling well with Test captain Virat Kohli. Like Sourav Ganguly-Wright and MS Dhoni-Kirsten, the BCCI may persist with the Kohli-Shastri combination for quite some time.
