Wasim Jaffer is new to coaching business but he is a no-nonsense character. He has coached Bangladesh and in the Indian Premier League (IPL) it is his first as a batting coach with Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).
Jaffer has an uncomplicated approach and it surely shows in KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal's games. He does not tamper with their natural instincts and allows them to play with freedom.
Rahul has been in phenomenal form in the IPL 2020. The captaincy role has hardly put any pressure on his batting. More so, because of his mentality, which allows himself to express as a player throughout the innings and be the captain only at the toss. The Karnataka batsman has stood tall on the wicket, watched the ball closely, and dispatched bowlers of any stature for boundaries and hits over the fence. He is, arguably, the best batsman in the IPL 2020 currently with former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis not far behind.
Agarwal, his new opening partner, is much more composed. He builds his innings gradually, keeps his head still, and changes gears as per the need of the match. His composure is one of the biggest reasons he has been successful in the shortest format and continues to grow after emerging as a fine Test opener during India's last tour Down Under.
Rahul and Agarwal know each other's game well. They have been in business for Karnataka for quite some time and compliment each other. Although, it is a new pair for the Kings XI Punjab, things have worked out so well for the side with the duo that one of the greatest batsmen in the shortest format Chris Gayle continues to warm the bench.
All this under the watchful eyes of 'unsung hero' Wasim Jaffer.
