Rohit Sharma honoured Virender Sehwag on his 41st birthday in style. The Mumbai batsman, who has impressed in his new innings as Test opener, registered his maiden double century on the second day of the third Test against South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday.

In the 88th over bowled by Lungi Ngidi , Rohit rocked back and hammered a pull over deep mid-wcket fence to get to the landmark, just like how 'Viru' used to do. Earlier, Rohit got to his century too with a six.

After celebrating the milestone, Rohit blasted another six off Ngidi before falling to Kagiso Rabada in the following over.

Rohit holed out after trying a similar shot off a bouncer from Rabada. The extra pace of Rabada meant that the ball came quicker on to bat and hit the higher part of the willow. Rohit got in the position to pull, but found Ngidi at fine leg. The South African players shook hands with the Hitman as he slowly walked back to the pavilion.

Rohit, who has three double centuries to his name in One Day Internationals, is the 24th Indian to score a double ton in the longest format of the game.

The 32-year-old smashed 28 fours and six sixes in his innings before getting out for 212.
