If you’re not careful while sharing links on Claude, the information could pop up as public links…
Picture this: you’re working on a project on Claude. Since this is a collaborative project, you share your learnings with a colleague as a link, and next thing you know, your chats are freely available on Google.
Or even worse, you were chatting with Claude regarding an illness or about your kids, you enter personal details and you then share your findings with your spouse. Same result: your private conversation pops up on Google for the world to see.
Well, that’s what’s been happening lately as some users have found out lately. Content and conversations generated with Anthropic’s cloud is popping up on Google and Bing, raising the question: when you share a conversation, who exactly does it go to?
How Claude chats end up on Google
Claude chats are private by default but users have the option to make conversations or Claude artefacts public to share with others.
Private Claude conversations were not exposed. This is very important to note as all the conversations that appeared on Google were shared as public links.
The issue rose because when the users shared those links, they didn’t expect it to appear in public forums as well. People on Reddit and X reported several incidents where planning documents and information about changes to a university’s academic calendar.
There were other, more severe cases where medical information, company documents and names and phone numbers of children were shared.
“Anyone with the link” can mean anyone
Claude’s sharing interface has an option that lets ‘anyone with the link’ open it. But this implies that you need to receive the link first.
A Fast Company report has revealed that’s not the case as several thousand of Claude links have been indexed. Users did not understand the implications of sharing the link.
Anthropic has claimed that it does not post the link anywhere and that the shared URLs are difficult to guess. But if someone posts the link anywhere online, such as a forum or social media site, the URL can become discoverable.
The technical problem behind it
The issue is because of how search engines function.
Anthropic used a robots.txt rule to tell search engines not to crawl chats. But this does not prevent a search engine from being indexed.
But there’s a flaw in the way this rule has been incorporated. There’s a noindex instruction on Claude share pages but that instruction sat behind a robots.txt block. If Google cannot crawl the page, it may not be able to read the instruction telling it not to index the page.
Anthropic’s response to the issue
But soon after these incidents were reported, the Google results could not be reproduced. This shows that Anthropic has acted on fixing the flaw.
Anthropic’s current guidance says shared-chat pages now carry a no-index instruction. But the company also clarified that it has no control over users posting, copying, screenshotting or archiving shared content.
Users can review their public links under Settings → Privacy → Shared chats and disable links they no longer need.
The Last Word
This issue is not limited to Claude. Other AI chatbots included ChatGPT were also affected.
Since people use AI for work, research, coding and asking personal questions, these conversations can contain far more person information than a regular website.
The safest rule is simple: treat any public AI share link as public information.
Before sharing any information, check for passwords, personal information, confidential company data or anything else you don’t want on a public forum.
Because “anyone with a link” could be a lot more people than you bargained for.
